Sunday Ramblings from the Hardin House Couch
While I’m not so thankful that Dad decided to share his germs with me (…. even my toes hurt!), I am thankful for…

Fall Break… ah. I love you. As I was driving home yesterday, I was mesmerized by the incredible colors of the changing leaves. This time last year, I made the drive to Madison each day for student teaching. This year, I’ve missed seeing those leaves every day! Well, as I was making my way home, I round a corner to find myself behind a little white pick-up truck with some buckets in the...

I love grading papers, don’t get me wrong. But when you have 120 papers to grade, multiple choice is about as boring as they come. (Don’t worry, though, I usually come up with some crazy tune so that I can remember the answers. For example - I know that yesterday’s Brain Pop Quiz key is ACABBCABCBACABBCABCB. I don’t know why I can still remember my song, but I can.) So, in...

Hardin House wishes you a Happy Halloween!
The past few days have been days that as I walk to my car from school I think I can’t wait to do this for real! I’ve been doing labs with my students this week. My mentor teacher likes labs because the students actually learn, but really hates setting them up, planning for them, and running them. She’s also not a huge fan of the clean-up.
So, the past two days I’ve found...
8th Grade Boy #1: Good morning, Miss Gamble. Did you have a good weekend?
Me: I sure did! Did you?
8th Grade Boy #1: Yes ma'am, except that I went huntin' Saturday and didn't get anything.
Me: I'm sorry to hear that.... I guess.
8th Grade Boy #2: Well, I went huntin' last weekend and got a baby deer.
Me: Bambi!
8th Grade Boy #2: Don't worry, Miss Gamble, she didn't have her spots still. So I guess she wasn't too little.
8th Grade Boy #1: Is it legal to shoot a deer that still has her spots?
8th Grade Boy #2: Nope... if they have their spots, you can't shoot 'em.
8th Grade Boy #3: Oops.
Everybody is a genius… but if you judge a fish by its ability to climb a...

It’s days like today when, for some unexplainable reason*, I feel like my thoughts are summed up with the blessing that we used to sing in elementary school. I love how there are certain things I remember from those days that are so simple, yet so true…
The Lord is good to me,
And so I thank the Lord…
For giving me the things I need
For the sun and the rain and the...
Today marks the half-way point of this round of student teaching. Really? How...

The Avett Brothers. Yep, they’re wonderful. I love their music, how they can make you laugh, smile, and dance uncontrollably, but how they can also make you cry. But more than their music I love their lyrics. I feel like they can capture so much in their words. And in concert? Boy oh boy, it’s worth it. And their voices - they’re so distinct and wonderful. And they’re real....
Welp, it’s midterm time. For some, this means a week full of insane tests and projects. Somehow, I have (thankfully) managed to make it through college without the madness of midterms. However, midterm week usually means the beginning of countdowns, especially in fall semester…. Countdown until Fall Break (break is a joke: it’s only one little day), Thanksgiving Break, Finals,...
Kitchen Table Conversations
Katie: (drinking my leftover cereal milk slowly with a spoon)
Olivia: ... and someone looks like a kitten.
Katie: Thanks.
Olivia: Katie Kitten.
Katie: Actually, my dad always called me Katie Kitty,
Olivia: Cute. My dad calls me chinchilla.... because I have soft skin.

Today, I was the teacher. Like the real teacher. The real, real teacher. My mentor teacher was out, so she had a substitute. But really, the substitute just sat there. (Or maybe she caused more problems than the students.) Regardless, I was pretty much in charge. It was wonderful! The school had Benchmark testing today, so the first two hours were spent in silence as I watched these poor kids try...
